Reiki was discovered by the Japanese physician Dr. Mikao Usui (1865-1926), during his stay in a 21-day meditation retreat on Mount Kurama.

In March, 1922, Usui felt a sudden surge of Reiki energy over his head. In April, he traveled to Tokyo, where he gave birth to the “Usui Reiki Ryoho Gakkai” Association.

In Central Tokyo, Usui opened a clinic for the teaching and practice of Reiki. There, Usui taught more than 2,000 students and trained 16 Reiki Masters.

Usui Sensei wanted Reiki to be available to everyone and he also intended to spread it worldwide. Hence, each person would have a possibility to work hand in hand with others for the betterment of the world.
